Darrian Subsector: Subsector of the Spinward Marches. The Darrian subsector contains the Darrian Confederation, a loose, interstellar community of about twenty worlds. Darrian is the oldest interstellar government in the Marches and boasts a higher technology level than any other world in the sector.
The Darrian Confederation: The Darrians are an advanced race who prize learning and pursuit of knowledge. They however recognize the need for defense in these dangerous times and so have developed a very efficient and feared military organistion based on centuries old high Tech level ships. They have also developed an ultimate deterrent "Star Trigger". This can set off supernovas and so destroy whole systems. They have never used this offensively but an accident in its development some years ago lead to the destruction of much of the Darrian home world in a disaster they call the Maghiz.

Daryens' (Darrians') Race History
Daryen/Darrian ship designs:
Daryen/Darrian Conferation information: The Darrian Confederation is a loose organization of 18 worlds with close ties to the Domain of Deneb. Compositionally, the Confederation consists of a blend of races: 20% Solomani, 8% Aslan, 12% assorted human races, and 60% Daryen/Darrian. Confederation inhabitants are known for their focus in scholastic and technological activities. Tourism also plays a signifcant role in their economy. With a tech level of 16 (one higher than the Imperial standard), Daryen's/Darrian's greatest strength lies in its astrophysical sciences. Daryen/Darrian scientists are reputed to be able to induce subnova flares in stars at will. Group of worlds in the Daryen/Darrian subsector settled by humans from Darrian during the period -1137 to -927. The current capital is Mire. The Daryen/Darrian Confederation contains 18 worlds within the same subsector and has a population of 17.19 billion. Daryens/Darrians are humans who developed independently on Daryen/Darrian. Some Solomani blood is evident from Solomani traders who encountered Daryen/Darrian in -1511 and provided them with sufficient technology to explore their subsector. The Darrian Confederation is a client state of the Imperium. It has had long-standing conflicts with the Sword Worlds. Since Strephon's murder, the Daryens/Darrians have reaffirmed their loyalty to the Imperium through Archduke Norris of the Domain of Deneb.
Darrian Group: The twelve worlds originally colonized from Darrian when it began interstellar settlement: Condaria (0528 Spinward Marches, Darrian (0627 Spinward Marches), Ektron (0326 Spinward Marches), Engrange (0425 Spinward Marches), Ilium (0426 Spinward Marches), Jacent (0624 Spinward Marches), Laberv (0325 Spinward Marches), Mire (00527 Spinward Marches), Roget (0427 Spinward Marches), Rorre (0526 Spinward Marches), Spume (0727 Spinward Marches), and 494-908 (0625 Spinward Marches). All but Condaria are members of the Darrian Confederation.
Daryen/Darrian Race Facts and Information: Daryen/Darrian physiology is a result of adapting to the alien environment. Daryens/Darrians are generally tall and thin, averaging just over 2m in height and 78kg in weight. Their most significant adaption is the ability to digest a normally indigestable amino acid native to Daryen/Darrian. They are poorly insulated as they do not develop subcutaneous fat layers very readily. Instead, their metabolism adjusts quickly to the available food supply, whether feast or famine. This adjustable internal "furnace" allows Daryens/Darrians to be comfortable in a much colder climate, as long as food is available. Protomelanin skin pigmentation protects Daryens/Darrians from ultraviolet radiation, without the need for acquiring a tan. It absorbs UV light without darkening in response and controls Vitamin D production in any amount of sunlight. Usual Daryen/Darrian skin colour is golden or greyish tan, and their hair is white or light-toned. Intermarriage with Solomani immigrants (largely of Semitic stock) introduced somewhat ruddier skin tones based on melanin pigments or darker hair, but only one or the other skin pigments occur, not a mixture. The low gravity of Daryen/Darrian means that, on average, Daryen/Darrians are weaker than Imperials. However, they have faster reaction times and acute sight and hearing. Dexterity is highly valued along with mental agility, and most educational systems in the Darrian Confederation attempt to develop both.
Certain Daryen/Darrian traits have been traced to retroviruses present in the environment. A few were able to meld successfully with Terran genes and produce favourable adaptions. For instance, Daryen/Darrians can metabolise and thrive on a high concentration of ozone in the high altitudes of their atmosphere. Nearly 40% of Daryen/Darrians are left-handed or ambidexterous. Equipment designs reflect this by being neutral as to handedness. The larger than average bridge between the two halves of the Daryen/Darrian brain may be a cause for this trait as well as a factor in inventiveness and mathematical ability. Musical talent is also widespread. Daryen/Darrian society is characterised more by individual's avocatrions than their vocations. Daryen/Darrians have a keen fascination with all sorts of knowledge, encouraged by their educational system. Many Daryens/Darrians develop an avocation of research, selecting a broad topic of interest and spending a lifetime following that topic.
Daryens/Darrians differentiate between original and secondary research. Original research usually requires extensive equipment and supplies. Even when published, results are often not understood. Secondary research is an analysis of published information in a search for new correlations and conclusions. Many Daryens/Darrians have composed at least one analysis of existing research; some become experts in their field. Every secondary researcher on Daryen/Darrian dreams of making a world-shaking discovery by taking two or more published pieces of research and using them to produce wholly unexpected or previously unsuspected results.
World of Daryen/Darrian Facts and Information:
The surface of Daryen/Darrian is divided by long, high mountain ranges into 5 basins. Each basin is centred on a sea fed by rivers draining the surrounding country; thus, the basins are the equivalent of continents. Each basin also contains the remains of a "Flame Pit", once a 2 km bed of glowing coals fed from below by geothermal action. Around each Pit stands the remnant of an Orchard. These trees growing here are circular but have a cross-section of about 5 square meters. These trees have been used as homes. Daryen/Darrian is a small world with low gravity. Four major cities on Daryen/Darrian are grav structures held aloft by grav modules. Rebhar was constructed as a mining platform for the mountainous rim of the Boyr Basin. Pororda, now a tourist centre in Rimb basin, was built as a sea farming centre. Kilulga, in the Abh basin, hangs in the upper atmosphere. Zehn Nyak in the Nyadh Basin is a migratory city, moving among 7 sites as the markets and seasons change. Daryen/Darrian is the technological center of the Darrian Confederation, as Mire/Spinward Marches is the political center. Scientists are in charge of the government and industry, paying careful attention to possible consequences before allowing changes. There are restrictions on the export of any artifacts of pre- Maghiz culture that still remain on Daryen/Darrian.
Government of Daryen:
Daryen is ruled, like some of the other local systems by a feudal technocracy. Feudal technocracy may take many forms , but it typically establishes a hierarchy of noble ranks based on technological achievement or responsibility. In Daryen's case, the supreme source of worldly power lies in the Daryen Council, a tripartite assembly of high ranking individuals. The assembly is the legislative body for Daryen; members of the assembly are selected by it for leadership positions in the government. In addition, the Daryen Council is constitutionally required to appoint a fraction of the population as Knights of Daryen (currently one in one million). Knights of Daryen are the electors of the Daryen Council. The average population Knights of Daryen is 100,000; those knights elect from thier ranks 100 members of the Daryen Council. Election is for life and automatically raises the individual to the noble rank of Baron of Daryen. Any member of the Daryen Council who is selected by the Council to be a Minister is automatically raised to the rank of Marquis of Daryen, although the Prime Minister is automatically jumped in noble rank to equal or outrank all other ministers. Second and subsequent elections to Minister for an individual usually involve a promotion in noble rank as well. High noble rank on Daryen has its benefits. The Candidate committee, responsible for drawing up the annual list of candidates for Knight of Daryen, is composed of all living Marquises. Associates, friends, benefactors, and those with common values and ideals with the Marquises are natural candidates for the list. Nobles of Daryen are assigned, when they are appointed, a specific geographic region of Daryen (equivalent to about one square kilometer; about three hundred per hex on a standard Traveller world map, IS Form 8). That region is the individual's constituency and he or she has a sworn responsibility to represent and look after the needs of those who inhabit thier specific territory. Territory without population is rarely assigned to knights. At times some territory is without an overseeing knight, and its inhabitants are permitted to express themselves to the baron overseeing the territory closest to them. All noble rank on Daryen is granted for life, althrough it may be taken away by decree of the Council, usually for crimes against the state. Noble rank is not inherited, althrough higher ranking nobles are often successful in having thier children granted knighthood.
The Implementation of Government:
The orders of the Daryen Council are conveyed to the bureaucracy of the government for implementation. Standing government agencies such as the Ministries, the local school districts, police forces, and environmental protection agencies are all financed by taxes levied by the Council, and they implement policies and laws which are decided upon by the Council.
The Participation of the People:
The Daryen Council is a self-perpetuating organization, but it nevertheless has and recognizes its' responsibility to address the needs of the people of Daryen. This responsibility is reinforced by the tying of each noble to a single square kilometer of land on Daryen and to its' constituency. Public opinion is a powerful force in directing the activities of the nobles of Daryen.
The Courts:
The Daryen legal system does not distinguish between criminal and civil wrongdoing. A lack of personal responsibility in handling relationships with others is considered just as criminal as theft or assault. As a result, all cases are prosecuted by the Daryen Counsel, an officer of the court who receives complaints and decides when to file charges. Long agom the people of Daryen discovered that their legal system produced many inequities and sometimes long delays. Naturally enough, they produced an alternative. Any case, criminal or civil, can be settled by arbitration. Individuals may enter into a binding contract to settle a dispute by taking it to an arbitrator who will listen to evidence, consider it, and make a ruling. Arbitrators are independent individuals hired by those party to the case being heard. In the case of genuine disputes, arbitrators attempt to mediate compromise solutions. Arbitrators do not have the power to hand down jail sentences or capital punishment. As a result, criminals prefer to have their cases heard by arbitrators rather than the official courts. Victims of property crimes prefer to take their cases to arbitrators because they have a greater chance, if the perpetrator is convicted, of getting restitution and even punitive damages. Legal disputes concerning negligence or misdeeds are better handled by arbitrators because the case is settled faster and more efficently. Om the other hand, the official courts are preferred for the prosecution of violent crimes because the criminal can be sentenced to prison (or death in capital cases). The presence of arbitrators in the justice system has legitimized a third method of resolving court disputes: private settlement. Private settlement in lawsuits is a common occurrence. Under threat of lawsuit, either side may offer to settle in order to minimize the potential for losing. On Daryen, even criminal and victim may come to a private settlement. A beating victim with proof of his assailant may convince his attacker to accept an equal beating instead of jail sentence; a robbery victim may negotiate a resturn of double his/her loss in return for pursuing the case no further.
Daryen/Darrian Library Data:
Abh: The first letter in the Darrian standardized alphabet. One of the five basins on the surface of Darrian. Abh Project: One of two Darrian research projects charged with investigating irregularities in the energy output of Tarnis. Its chosen method of sending an experimental probe deep into the interior of Tarnis resulted in massive disruptions of the star's energy balance, triggering the Maghiz. The Abh project was based in the asteroid belt located in first orbit of the Darrian system; all trace of the project was destroyed by the stellar flares the project triggered. Basin: Basic geographic feature on the surface of Daryen. Daryen has 5 isolated seas, each totally unconnected to the others. Each sea drains a basin; each basin is effectively an independent ecology. Boyr: One of five basins on Daryen. Daryen: Te-zlodh word for world; native name for the Darrian homeworld. Engrange (C554769-8): One of the worlds of the Confederation, Engrange was recolonized from Illium in -40 and remains under Illium's jurisdiction, through its population is fast approaching that of the mother planet. Entropic Worlds: A group pf four worlds, including Entrope and its three neighbors. Maghiz: The devastation caused by the stellar flares of Tarnis in -925. Mire (A665A95-B): One of the Confederation worlds, Mire has become an underground world, which allows the surface to be used for agriculture and natural preserves. Government is a major industry on Mire. Bureaucrats and military personnel are to be found everywhere. Most of the large corporations keep offices here. Nosea (B2326BB-C): Nosea was named by explorers who were disappointed in the small hydrographics percentage of the world. Actual water coverage is about five percent; the remainder is ice-cap. Onsorik: The Ancient responsible for selecting the humans from Terra that were transported to Daryen. Orchard: An arrangement of specially selected trees created by the Ancients. An orachard provided shelter an food the Daryens when they were first brought to Daryen. Nyadh: One of five basins on Darrian. Rimb: One of five basins on Darrian. Stronghold: The Solomani base established on Daryen in -1521 when they first arrived on Daryen. Located on a high mountain plateau where Rimb, Boyr, and Abh basins meet, it was intended as a secret retreat for the Solomani in the event public opinion turned against them. By -1450, the Solomani were an accepted part of Daryen society, and the Stronghold became known as a research and manufacturing center. Tarnis: The primary star of the Darrian system. Udh: The last letter in the Daryen standardized alphabet. Udh Project: One of two Darrian research projects charged with investigating irregularities in the energy output of Tarnis. Its chosen method was to analyze the interior of the star by measuring the interference of two intersecting meson beams. One beam was projected from Darrian itself while the other was projected from a reasearch laboratory on Telaret, a moon af the gas giant Leryin in fourth orbit of the system. The project achieved some interesting preliminary results, but was terminated when the Maghiz struck. Winston (E887573-6): Winston was thinly colonized before it was taken over and lost a great deal of its population and technology repeated fighting with the Sword Worlds. Some nations are still sympathetic to the Sword Worlds, but most are loyal to Daryen
Daryen Art: Samples of Daryen Art is located here. Daryen art has passed through many stages during the development of their world. The standard forms developed naturally: painting, sculpture, drama, and literature. All are an accepted part of Daryen lives. When viewed against the backgrounds of thousands of worlds, it becomes obvious that only the best examples capture a wide audience. Only one type of unusual art from Daryen has been able to capture the audiences of galaxy: the flame sculptures of Rimb. Flame sculpture is an old art form on Daryen, orignating in the heady, high-tech years before the Maghiz. Technicans working with gravitic generators applied their forces to gas flames and were able to shape and mold them into required forms. The first applications were cutting torch heads. Soon, the flames were being molded to form letters, company names, and logos. Artisans learned to create images, busts, scuplted landscapes, and other three-dimensional forms from flame, in the process finding that there was an appreciation and a market for this type of artwork. The Maghiz stopped development of the art form as recovery took higher priority. A few examples were produced between -921 and -200 and they are considered the rarest of Daryen flame sculptures.
Daryen Adventure Ideas: One: Adventurers looking for stolen Tech 16 items, find a few unknown
items of their own. The adventurers have been contacted by a nameless
official to recover what is thought to be stolen pre-Maghiz item(s).
In a long and hard chase around the planet and leading into space,
the adventurers find out the "items" are stolen Daryen data crystals.
The release of the information would cause great embarrassment to
some government officials. It turns out in the confusion of the chase,
the adventurers have acquired a few unknown items. Do they return
them? Do they sell them? Do they try and use them? Two: Three: The party has been asked to help investigate the lost outpost on the planet of Gungnir/Sword Worlds. Long lost informaion has been located in ancient Daryen records. There were hints of drug development that could result in a better Anagathic drug. A nameless Megacorp is interested in knowing if these rumors are true. See Mike West's mysteries web page for details here.
